Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The contribution is original and unpublished, and is not under review or awaiting publication elsewhere. If otherwise, this must be justified in the “Comments to the Editor” section.
  • The files for submission are in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, or RTF format (provided they do not exceed 2MB).
  • Where available, URLs for references have been provided.
  • The manuscript follows the style and bibliographic requirements as presented in the points below (author guidelines)
  • Submissions that do not comply with these guidelines will be returned to the authors for revision.

Author Guidelines

Submitted articles must be original, not previously published, nor submitted or awaiting publication. Any other situation must be flagged by the authors, who should contact the editorial team for review. Failure to comply with these principles may result in the rejection of the work.

It is assumed that:

  • the submitted work is the actual work of the authors, and does not constitute plagiarism.
  • all authors agree with the submitted text.
  • authors must clearly declare any conflicts of interest.
  • if there are any funding sources, these should be acknowledged.
  • authors must promptly notify the journal if they identify an error in a published article and should be willing to issue a retraction.

 

Types of Publications

In addition to research articles that may be included in either the thematic dossier or the varia section, critical reviews may be submitted and will be included in the “Reviews” section.

The varia section also accepts other formats, such as infographics, podcasts, or videos, provided they adhere to the submission guidelines.

Formatting

  • Documents must be submitted in Word format, using Arial font, size 12 pt, with justified alignment. Line spacing should be set to 1.5 pt, with 6 pt spacing before each paragraph and 0 pt after.
  • Pages should be numbered sequentially and footnotes must be formatted using automatic numbering.

Length

  • Articles must not exceed 9,000 words.
  • Critical reviews must not exceed 800 words.

Title, Abstract, and Keywords

  • The title should be clear and concise.
  • Article abstracts should be provided in both Portuguese and English, with a maximum length of 100 words.
  • Between three to five keywords should be provided in both Portuguese and English.

Authorship

  • Article proposals must not include author identifiers. They should be accompanied by a document containing the author(s)’ names, affiliations, institutional addresses, updated ORCID ID, and email address.

Languages of Publication and Style Issues

  • Articles are accepted in Portuguese, Spanish, French, English and Italian.
  • Subheadings should be in bold.
  • Italics should only be used for foreign expressions or highlights in quotations.

References

  • The journal follows the APA (7th ed.) “Author-Date” citation style.
  • References must be cited within the text (e.g., Dias, 2019, p. 65).
  • A complete bibliography of all sources cited in the text must be included at the end of the article, organised alphabetically by the authors’ last names.
  • URLs and DOIs for online references should be included and cited according to APA standards.

Citations

  • Short citations (fewer than 40 words) should be integrated into the text and enclosed within quotation marks.
  • Longer citations (exceeding 40 words) should be presented as a separate block of text, starting on a new line with a 0.3 cm left margin, without quotation marks. Subsequent lines should follow the same indentation, with justified alignment and single line spacing.
  • Square brackets [ ] should be used to add words or terms within citations for clarification.
  • Citations in foreign languages should be presented in the original language, with a corresponding translation provided in a footnote.

Footnotes

  • Font size 10 pt and single line spacing should be used for footnotes.

Graphics Materials

  • Images must be submitted as individual files, clearly labelled, in JPG or PNG format, and with a resolution of 120 dpi.
  • A comprehensive list of all graphics included in the article should be provided, numbered sequentially according to their appearance in the text, along with captions and appropriate source or credit details.
  • The placement of each graphic, image, chart, or table must be clearly indicated within the text.
  • Authors are fully responsible for ensuring that all graphics used in the article comply with copyright laws and for covering any associated permissions or fees.
  • Permissions for the use of images must be submitted prior to the finalisation of the article.
