Abstract

Under the pressures of fascism, Maria Teresa Horta drew inspiration to create Novas Cartas Portuguesas, a work of resistance against Portugal’s dictatorial regime. Co-authored with Maria Isabel Barreno and Maria Velho da Costa, the book denounced political and social oppression and faced censorship in 1972. Women’s literary resistance has historical roots, as exemplified in the 18th century by the Marquesa de Alorna, who defied the limitations imposed on women. Today, the fight for women’s rights is reflected in their connection to the written word, challenging historical perceptions of women as both sacred and dangerous, symbolizing resilience against marginalization.
