A very brief overview of the emergence and development of mathematics in Europe is presented, as well as a brief reference to the scientific organizations (academies and societies) relevant to the mathematical sciences in Europe, ending with a section on the
foundation and activities of the European Mathematical Society (EMS), including reminiscences about the role of the Portuguese Mathematical Society by the Portuguese representative at the founding of the EMS.
